Belturbet Buildings of Heritage

Belturbet in Co Cavan is described in Dean Henry’s ‘’Upper Lough Erne (1739)’’ as follows:

‘’This is a pleasant borough charmingly situated on the south side of the river from where it ascends to the top of the hill, in one straight broad street; from the height  another, forming with this another, forming with this a right angle, descends to the bridge. At the angle formed by the two stands a pretty market house, which commands a fine view of the whole town and river. On the top of the hill opposite the market house stands the castle, the seat of Lord Viscount Lanesborough. This is a lofty house divided into several large rooms and apartments, but its principal beauty and grandeur is from its bold pleasant situation and its bold hanging gardens which descend in a series of terraces towards the river, which at the lower terrace is in the form of a long and broad canal where generally some small pleasure yachts and other boats ride at anchor.’’
